Ancient built remains known and studied chiefly as archaeological sites rather than as intact standing buildings still serving their original function. Belongs here: any named archaeological site whose architectural interest is documented primarily through excavation and ruin rather than continuous use. Does not belong here: an ancient building that still stands substantially intact and is categorized by its original function instead, such as an ancient temple still treated primarily as a religious building.
