Pont du Gard

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge across the Gardon River near Vers Pont du Gard in southern France, built in the first century AD as part of a roughly 50 kilometer aqueduct carrying water to the Roman colony of Nemausus, now Nîmes. Rising about 49 meters over three tiers of stone arches built from local shelly limestone, it is one of the best preserved Roman aqueduct bridges in existence and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its exceptional preservation and architectural ingenuity.
