Pergamon

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

Pergamon was an ancient Greek city in what is now western Turkey, its acropolis developed from the third century BC onward as the capital of the Attalid dynasty into one of the most architecturally ambitious hilltop cities of the Hellenistic world. Its most celebrated structure, the Pergamon Altar, was a monumental stepped platform surrounded by a sculpted frieze depicting the battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants, later dismantled and reconstructed inside a Berlin museum, where its display remains a subject of ongoing restitution debate. The acropolis also held one of antiquity's largest surviving theaters, built into the natural slope of the hill at a notably steep gradient to maximize seating capacity within limited hillside space, along with a library once said to rival that of Alexandria. Pergamon's building techniques and dramatic hillside planning, integrating temples, a gymnasium and public spaces across a steep terraced site, influenced later Hellenistic and Roman urban design, and the ancient city and its layered cultural landscape were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
