Rani ki Vav is a stepwell in the town of Patan in Gujarat, India, on the banks of the Saraswati River. Its construction is attributed to Udayamati, wife of the 11th century Chaulukya king Bhima I. The stepwell had silted over and was rediscovered in the 1940s, then restored by the Archaeological Survey of India in the 1980s, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. It is built as an underground shrine honoring the sanctity of water, with sculptures depicting numerous Hindu deities across seven levels of stairs.
