Levi Jordan Plantation State Historic Site

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

The Levi Jordan Plantation State Historic Site preserves the main house and archaeological remains of a sugar and cotton plantation founded in 1848 by the Georgia-born planter Levi Jordan, near Brazoria, Texas. The Greek Revival main house, built between 1849 and 1851 of yellow long-leaf pine imported from Florida, was constructed and detailed by enslaved workers; by 1860 more than 130 enslaved people, some born in Africa, lived and worked on what had become one of the largest sugar and cotton plantations in Texas. Archaeological excavation at the site has recovered more than 600,000 artifacts documenting the lives and cultural practices of the enslaved and later freed people who lived there. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and a state historic site in 2001, the property has been managed by the Texas Historical Commission since 2007, with restoration of the plantation house underway since 2012.
