Cinnamon Bay Plantation

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

Cinnamon Bay Plantation is a roughly 300 acre historic property on the north central coast of Saint John in the United States Virgin Islands, containing the ruins of a Danish-era sugar plantation alongside evidence of earlier Taino settlement. Archaeological excavations there have documented Taino ceremonial activity as well as the remains of plantation buildings, and the 13 acre historic district added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 includes plantation ruins and two cemeteries. The plantation, claimed by Denmark in 1718 and worked by enslaved laborers, was the site of a 1733 slave rebellion in which enslaved people loyal to the Jansen family helped the owners escape as the buildings were destroyed; the land later changed hands repeatedly before Laurance Rockefeller donated it in 1956, and it is now part of Virgin Islands National Park.
