The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel stands within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, built by the Canadian Pacific Railway and opened in 1888 to a design by the architect Bruce Price, part of the same railway hotel-building program that produced the Chateau Frontenac. The hotel was substantially rebuilt and expanded in stone over the following decades, including reconstruction of its central tower in 1928 after fire damage, taking on the turreted, Scottish Baronial styling that gives it the popular nickname Castle in the Rockies. Set against the surrounding mountains and the Bow River valley, it has functioned as both a luxury destination and a symbol of the railway-driven tourism that opened the Canadian Rockies to visitors.
