Dungeness (Cumberland Island, Georgia)

Residential Buildings

Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion at the center of a historic district associated with several families significant in American history. It takes its name from a nearby sandy spit first recorded in a 1765 land grant petition, almost certainly itself named after the Dungeness headland on the south coast of England. The first Dungeness house was built by the widow of Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, Catharine Miller, who in 1800 raised a four-story tabby mansion over a Timucuan shell mound on land Greene had acquired in 1783, and during the War of 1812 British forces occupying the island used the house as a headquarters.
