Borden Oaks

Residential Buildings

Borden Oaks is a Federal-style plantation house and historic district near Greensboro, Alabama, built in 1835 by John Scott Gray and his wife Martha Thompson on land given by her father, and originally called Locust Lawn until Martha's 1845 remarriage to Richard Benjamin Borden. The two-story frame house has a hipped roof, a five-bay facade, and a central two-tiered porch with doorways drawing on Asher Benjamin's 1833 pattern book The Practice of Architecture, and a matching two-story rear addition. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 1994, as part of the Plantation Houses of the Alabama Canebrake multiple property listing, and its porch has since been rebuilt using salvaged columns.
