Chicora Wood Plantation

Residential Buildings

Chicora Wood Plantation, originally known as Matanzas, is a former rice plantation in Georgetown County, South Carolina, established between 1732 and 1736, with its 1819 plantation house still standing today. Robert Francis Withers Allston took over its management in 1827, building it into the base for a network of rice plantations that produced 1.5 million pounds of rice by 1860 using 630 enslaved laborers. His daughter, Elizabeth Allston Pringle, later managed the property from 1896 until her death there in 1921, writing about plantation life in her books A Woman Rice Planter and Chronicles of Chicora Wood. The house, built in the Greek Revival style on a raised basement typical of the region, survives with a number of outbuildings including its rice mill complex, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1973, as part of the Pee Dee River Rice Planters Historic District.
