Aksum

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

Aksum is a town in Ethiopia's Tigray Region, at an elevation of about 2,131 meters near the Adwa mountains, and was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, described as a metropolis in ancient trade accounts by the 1st century AD. The kingdom's capital functioned as a major power until roughly the 9th century, when ecological decline and political change brought abandonment, though Aksum later regained importance as the ceremonial and spiritual capital of the Ethiopian Empire, hosting royal coronations and remaining a pilgrimage site. Its architectural legacy is best represented by its monumental granite stelae, or obelisks, raised as grave markers; the Northern Stelae Park holds the largest of them, including the Great Stele at 33 meters and King Ezana's Stele at 24 meters, both roughly 1,700 years old and celebrated as feats of Aksumite engineering. UNESCO inscribed Aksum's archaeological sites as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
