Schindler House

Residential Buildings

The Schindler House stands in West Hollywood, California, designed by the Austrian-American architect Rudolph Schindler as a combined residence and studio for himself, his wife, and another couple, and completed in 1922 shortly after Schindler emigrated to the United States to work briefly for Frank Lloyd Wright. Its plan departed radically from conventional domestic layouts of the period, arranging the house as a series of interlocking L-shaped studio units, each with its own sliding canvas-covered outdoor sleeping porch on the roof, built using a tilt-slab concrete wall construction method that left narrow glazed slots between the poured panels. The house's open, flowing interior spaces and close integration of indoor rooms with garden courtyards anticipated design ideas that would become common in later California modernism, and it is often cited as one of the first fully modernist houses built in the United States. It now serves as a house museum and exhibition space operated by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture.
