Chittorgarh Fort

Fortifications and Military Architecture

Chittorgarh Fort occupies a long hilltop above the town of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, India, and was for centuries the capital fortress of the Mewar kingdom before its rulers relocated to Udaipur. Covering an area considered the largest of any fort in India, its walls enclose palaces, temples and towers built across several dynastic periods, including the Vijay Stambh, or Tower of Victory, raised in the fifteenth century to commemorate a Mewar military triumph. The fort withstood and eventually fell to three major historical sieges, events remembered in Rajasthani tradition alongside accounts of mass self-immolation by the fort's women rather than face capture. UNESCO inscribed it in 2013 as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage Site.
