Villa Doria Pamphili

Palaces and Aristocratic Residences

Villa Doria Pamphili is a seventeenth century villa and its surrounding grounds on the Gianicolo hill in Rome, just outside the Porta San Pancrazio, forming the largest landscaped public park in the city. The Pamphili family began assembling the property in 1630 under Pamfilio Pamfili, then commissioned a grander villa after Cardinal Giambattista Pamphili became Pope Innocent X in 1644. The sculptor Alessandro Algardi led the building campaign from 1645, assisted by Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, with construction finished by 1647 and the gardens completed by 1653. When the Pamphili line ended in the eighteenth century, Pope Clement XIII granted Prince Giovanni Andrea IV Doria the family's surname, arms and properties in 1763. Rome's city government purchased the park between 1965 and 1971, and it now serves the public for recreation while the villa's Casino del Bel Respiro operates as a museum.
