Budapest Keleti Railway Station

Transportation Buildings

Budapest Keleti is the main international and intercity railway terminal of Budapest, Hungary, serving long distance connections toward eastern Hungary, Transylvania, the Balkans and beyond. Built between 1881 and 1884 and opened on August 16, 1884, the station was designed in an eclectic style by Gyula Rochlitz and János Feketeházy. Its main facade carries statues honoring the railway pioneers James Watt and George Stephenson, and the interior includes frescoes by Karoly Lotz, above seven platforms serving thirteen tracks. The station's name, meaning eastern, distinguishes it from Budapest's western terminal, which historically served routes toward Vienna and Paris.
