Masada

Fortifications and Military Architecture

Masada is a fortified plateau rising above the Judaean Desert near the Dead Sea in Israel, first fortified in the first century BC by King Herod the Great, who built a complex of palaces, storehouses and a sophisticated water-collection system into the isolated, naturally defensible rock. Its most striking structure is Herod's Northern Palace, built across three descending terraces cut into the cliff face, combining private living quarters with a semicircular balcony offering panoramic desert views, an engineering feat given the site's remoteness and steep terrain. Masada became known as the last stronghold of Jewish rebels during the First Jewish-Roman War, where, according to the ancient historian Josephus, defenders chose mass suicide in 73 or 74 AD rather than surrender to the besieging Roman army, whose massive earthen assault ramp remains visible on the site's western side today. Masada was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, cited for both its architectural achievement and its historical significance.
