Expiatory Chapel of Monza

Monuments, Towers and Commemorative Structures

The Expiatory Chapel in Monza, Italy, is a monument chapel built to atone for and commemorate the site where King Umberto I of Italy was murdered on July 29, 1900, by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci. It stands near the entrance to the Royal Villa of Monza, on Via Matteo da Campione. The son of Umberto, Vittorio Emanuele III, commissioned the aged architect Giuseppe Sacconi, and the work was completed by Guido Cirilli, a pupil of Sacconi, in 1910. Obelisk like crosses rise from a stone chapel, surmounted by a bronze crown and the royal symbols of the House of Savoy, and the entrance is surmounted by a Pieta by the sculptor Lodovico Pogliaghi.
