Shisen-do is a Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen school in the Sakyo ward of Kyoto, Japan. It began as the private villa of the scholar and garden designer Ishikawa Jozan, a former vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who converted it into a temple in 1641 after his retirement and designed its garden himself. The main hall displays portraits of thirty-six celebrated Chinese poets painted by the artist Kano Tan'yu, and the garden includes a sozu, a bamboo device that clacks to frighten away animals, regarded as a masterwork of Japanese garden design enjoyed across all four seasons. Shisen-do was designated a National Historic Site in 1928 and remains an active temple open to visitors.
