Why is the Red Fort called the Red Fort?
Its massive walls are built of red sandstone.
The name comes from the massive enclosing walls of red sandstone. UNESCO describes the Red Fort as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad, the new capital of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It stands beside an older fort, Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546, and the two together form the Red Fort Complex.
