Kazansky Rail Terminal

Transportation Buildings

Kazansky railway terminal is one of Moscow's nine major railway stations, standing on Komsomolskaya Square beside the Leningradsky and Yaroslavsky terminals. An earlier station on the site opened in 1862 for the Moscow to Ryazan line, and the present building was designed by the architect Alexey Shchusev in an Art Nouveau style deliberately made to resemble the Soyembika Tower in the city of Kazan, the terminal's principal destination; construction began in 1913 and was not completed until 1940. The station has 9 platforms and 17 tracks, was electrified in 1933, and underwent further reconstruction in 1950 and 1987. It primarily serves the eastbound line toward Kazan, Yekaterinburg and beyond, part of one route of the Trans-Siberian Railway, as well as the southeastbound line toward Ryazan, and was ranked ninth among Europe's best train stations by the Consumer Choice Centre in 2020.
