Bohemia Farm

Residential Buildings

Bohemia Farm, also known as Milligan Hall, is a historic home on the Bohemia River at Earleville, Cecil County, Maryland, a five-bay-wide Flemish bond brick Georgian style house built around 1743 with an attached 19th century frame gambrel-roof wing. Its interior features elaborate Rococo plasterwork and a full Chinese Chippendale staircase, and it served part time as the home of Louis McLane. The estate was founded by the Bohemian-born cartographer Augustine Herman, whose son Ephraim became a principal convert to the Labadist faith, a Frisian Pietist sect practicing a form of Christian communism; in 1683 Herman granted 3,750 acres to the Labadists to form a colony that never grew beyond about 100 settlers and ceased to exist after 1720. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
