FAQs

When did the White House get its name, and is the story about covering fire damage true?

The name is recorded from 1811, three years before the 1814 fire, so the paint-over story is a myth.

The building was first called the President's Palace, the Presidential Mansion or the President's House. The earliest evidence of the public calling it the White House dates to 1811. The popular story that white paint was applied after the British burned Washington in 1814, to hide the fire damage, is a myth. The name Executive Mansion stayed in official use until President Theodore Roosevelt established The White House as its formal name by Executive Order in 1901.
