The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as St. Mary's Cathedral or Urakami Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Motoomachi district of Nagasaki, Japan. Construction of the original brick Neo-Romanesque building began in 1895 and finished in 1925, when its twin 64 meter spires made it the largest Christian structure in the Asia-Pacific region. On August 9, 1945, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki detonated only about 500 meters away in Urakami and completely destroyed the cathedral. A new reinforced concrete cathedral was completed by October 1959 on the same site, and brick tiles were added in 1980 to recall the appearance of the original French-influenced design. The rebuilt cathedral serves today both as a place of worship for Nagasaki's Catholic community and as a memorial to the victims of the bombing.
