A. Conger Goodyear House

Residential Buildings

The A. Conger Goodyear House is a modernist residence at 14 Orchard Lane in Old Westbury, New York, designed by the architect Edward Durell Stone and completed in 1938 for the businessman and art patron Anson Conger Goodyear. Built in the International Style on a barren hilltop site, the one-story house uses low horizontal lines, extensive glazing and overhanging eaves to manage sunlight through the seasons, and it is organized around a gallery built to display Goodyear's modern art collection. The 6,000-square-foot house sits on a 5.5-acre parcel and has five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. Goodyear had a fine collection of modern paintings, and I decided to have a gallery serve as a "spinal column" from which all the rooms, with an expansive view to the south, opened, I employed glass walls from floor to ceiling, the ceilings continuing beyond the walls to form wide sheltering eaves.
