Eames House

Residential Buildings

The Eames House, designated Case Study House No. 8, sits on a eucalyptus-lined bluff in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, designed and built in 1949 by the husband-and-wife designers Charles and Ray Eames as their own home and studio. It was commissioned under the Case Study House program run by Arts and Architecture magazine, which challenged architects to design affordable, replicable modern homes using industrial materials, and the Eameses assembled their house from standard steel factory-frame components ordered from a catalog, arranged into two rectangular volumes of glass, steel and colored infill panels set into a hillside. Rather than one open glass box, the design divided the house and a separate studio across the site so as to preserve a row of eucalyptus trees the couple wanted to keep. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006 and remains one of the most studied houses of the postwar Case Study House program.
