Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

Transportation Buildings

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a railway terminus in the Fort area of Mumbai, India, designed chiefly by the British architect Frederick William Stevens with an initial design contribution from Axel Haig and engineering by Wilson Bell. Construction began in May 1878 and the station opened on May 20, 1888, built in a blended Indo-Saracenic and Victorian Gothic Revival style to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, under the name Victoria Terminus. It serves as headquarters of the Central Railway and has 18 platforms, 11 for mainline and 7 for suburban trains, making it one of India's busiest stations. The station was renamed in 1996 for the seventeenth-century Maratha king Shivaji, with Maharaj added to the official name in 2017, and UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2004.
