St. Ann's Well, Malvern

Cultural and Institutional Buildings

St. Ann's Well is a spring house on the slopes of the Malvern Hills above Great Malvern in Worcestershire, England, where Malvern water flows from an ornately carved spout beside a cafe. The present building dates to 1813, with an octagonal extension added in 1841, and the well is named for Saint Anne. It became well known in the eighteenth century after physician Dr. John Wall studied and publicized the purity of its water, making it one of the most popular resorts for wealthy invalids in the early days of the Water Cure movement; visitors included Queen Adelaide in 1842 and Princess Victoria, who opened a new path to the well. Bottled Malvern Water was later sold commercially under the St Ann's Well name.
