Anglecot

Residential Buildings

Anglecot is a historic house at the corner of Evergreen and Prospect Avenues in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, designed by the architect Wilson Eyre in 1883 for Charles Adams Potter, a linoleum manufacturer, with the sculptor John J. Boyle contributing to the design. Built in the Queen Anne style with shingle style elements, the house takes its name from standing at a forty five degree angle to the street intersection, an angled cottage. Originally a private residence that hosted social events in the early twentieth century, it later operated as a sanatorium from before 1951 into the 1970s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as a contributing property of the Chestnut Hill Historic District, and between 1981 and 1983 the developers Richard Snowden and Virginia C. Wilmsen, working as Anglecot Associates, converted it into nine condominiums under preservation easements protecting the historic structure.
