Clinton House (Poughkeepsie, New York)

Residential Buildings

Clinton House is an eighteenth-century Georgian stone building at 549 Main Street in Poughkeepsie, New York, built around 1765 by former county sheriff Clear Everitt on land belonging to Hugh van Kleeck. Despite its name, it was never the residence of George Clinton, New York's first governor; instead it probably served as a meeting place for state legislators when Poughkeepsie briefly functioned as New York's capital in 1777. Sold from Udney Hay's ownership in 1786 after a debt seizure, the deteriorated building was acquired by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1900 and presented to Governor Theodore Roosevelt. Added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a New York State Historic Site in 1982, it now houses the offices and library of the Dutchess County Historical Society alongside a room reserved for the Daughters of the American Revolution.
