The More

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

The More was a sixteenth century royal palace in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, originally built for Cardinal Wolsey before passing to Henry VIII in 1531. Catherine of Aragon lived there after the annulment of her marriage to Henry VIII, and the Treaty of the More was concluded there between Henry VIII and French ambassadors; in 1527 a French ambassador judged the palace more impressive than Hampton Court. The mansion had a timber framed gallery 253 feet long along with brick construction, stained glass, and furnishings bearing Anne Boleyn's emblems, but it was abandoned after 1556 and demolished in 1661. Nothing remains above ground today; the site is a scheduled ancient monument buried under about a meter of soil at what is now Merchant Taylors' Prep, and excavations in 1952 to 1955 and a 2012 Time Team dig uncovered carved Renaissance stone pillars.
