Castro Adobe

Residential Buildings

The Castro Adobe is a historic two story house in California's Pájaro Valley near Watsonville, built between 1848 and 1849 by Juan Jose Castro on the Rancho San Andrés land grant originally given to his father, Jose Joaquin Castro, whose family had come to California with the 1775 to 1776 Anza expedition. Built in the Monterey Colonial style, it is described as the only two story hacienda ever built in Santa Cruz County, and it featured what was reportedly the county's first fandango dance floor and one of its first indoor kitchens. The adobe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and designated California Historical Landmark No. 998; damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, it has been restored since 2007 and is now managed by California State Parks.
