Villa Cavrois

Residential Buildings

Villa Cavrois is a large modernist mansion in Croix, in northern France, built between 1929 and 1932 by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens for the textile industrialist Paul Cavrois, who had seven children. Its International Style design reflects 1920s modernist ideals of air, light, work, sport, hygiene, comfort, and efficiency, and the house is faced in yellow brick with interiors and fittings designed as an integrated whole by Mallet-Stevens. The French state acquired the property in 2001, and since 2008 it has been managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, which completed a restoration and reopened the house to the public as a museum on June 13, 2015. It is regarded as a major work of modern architecture and the leading example of the style in northern France.
