Herodian architecture

Ancient and Classical Architecture

Herodian architecture is a style of classical architecture characteristic of the numerous building projects undertaken during the reign of Herod the Great, who ruled Judaea as a client kingdom of the Roman Empire from 37 to 4 BC. Herod's most famous project was his reconstruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and his works were distinguished by strategic placement for dramatic vistas, seen at the northern palace at Masada, the palace at Jericho, the seaside palace at Caesarea and the Herodium. His projects often combined ceremonial and administrative spaces with storage, water facilities, baths and fortifications, integrating water features and greenery, using local materials such as kurkar and limestone alongside imported materials like Italian volcanic sand and foreign craftsmen for decoration.
