Carlheim

Residential Buildings

Carlheim, also called Paxton, is a mansion in the northeast part of Leesburg, Virginia, built around 1872 in the Second Empire and Italianate styles by architects Henry C. Dudley and John Norris for Pennsylvania industrialist Charles R. Paxton and his wife Rachel, who lived there until her death in December 1921. The house covers nearly 20,000 square feet with 32 rooms on a 52 acre property, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 28, 1979. It now operates as the Paxton Campus of the Arc of Loudoun, an organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosting public events including a concert series and a haunted house attraction.
