Copenhagen City Hall

Government and Civic Buildings

Copenhagen City Hall occupies the west side of the Danish capital's central square, completed in 1905 to a design by the architect Martin Nyrop after a design competition held in the 1890s. Its red brick facade and asymmetrical tower, rising roughly 105.6 meters, are built in the National Romantic style that drew on both medieval Danish town halls and the Italian Gothic civic architecture of buildings such as Siena's Palazzo Pubblico, blending references that were unusual for a Nordic public building of its era. The building remains the seat of Copenhagen's municipal government and also houses Jens Olsen's World Clock, an elaborate astronomical clock installed in 1955 that displays time across multiple calendar and celestial cycles simultaneously. Its tower is open to the public and offers panoramic views over the city center.

Has Building Type

Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.
