Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India on Raisina Hill in New Delhi, was designed by the British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, with construction beginning in 1912 and finishing in 1929. Built originally as Viceroy's House to serve as the residence of Britain's colonial viceroys, it briefly became Government House after Indian independence in 1947 before taking its present role as the president's residence in 1950. Lutyens and Baker developed what came to be called the Delhi Order, a style drawing on Indo-Saracenic principles that combines Western classical massing with Indian decorative elements, most visibly in the building's great dome. Spanning about 200,000 square metres across four floors with 340 rooms and some 2.5 kilometres of interior corridors, built using roughly 700 million bricks and 3 million cubic feet of stone, it stands as the largest official residence of any head of state in the world.
