Saeima House, formally the House of the Livonian Noble Corporation, stands at the corner of Jekaba and Klostera streets in the Old Town of Riga and serves today as the seat of the Saeima, the parliament of Latvia. Designed by the Baltic German architect Robert Pflug together with Janis Baumanis, the first academically trained Latvian architect, it was built between 1863 and 1867 in a Neo Renaissance style with an eclectic finish, standing opposite Saint James's Cathedral. A fire in 1921 badly damaged the building, and architect Eizens Laube oversaw its restoration, replacing an earlier facade statue of the Teutonic leader Wolter von Plettenberg with one depicting the Latvian epic hero Lacplesis. Further renovation in 1996 and 1997 refreshed the interior, including its marble staircase and plenary chamber, for the needs of a modern parliament.
