The Veterans Home of California is a state-run residential care campus in Yountville, California, founded in 1884 to house aged and disabled military veterans. Opened with 17 residents under the governance of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Mexican War Veterans Association, it became an official state institution in 1889 and has grown into the largest facility of its kind in the United States, housing nearly 1,200 veterans of conflicts from World War II through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The campus includes a theater, a golf course and a cemetery, and its 1918 Armistice Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
