Sawtelle Veterans Home

The Sawtelle Veterans Home was a care facility for disabled American veterans in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California, formally known as the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. It was established in 1887 on three hundred acres donated by Senator John P. Jones and Arcadia B. de Baker, and grew with a further land grant in 1888 and, in 1890, twenty more acres for use as a veterans' cemetery. With more than a thousand veterans in residence, a hospital was built on the site in 1900 and was replaced in 1927 by the James W. Wadsworth Hospital, now the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center.
