Hamburg City Hall is the seat of the government of the city state of Hamburg, Germany, housing the chamber where the 121 members of the Hamburg Parliament meet, the Senate meeting room and the office of the First Mayor. Designed under lead architect Martin Haller with six collaborating architects, it was built between 1886 and 1897 and inaugurated on 26 October 1897 in a Neo Renaissance style meant to project the wealth and independence of the Hanseatic city. The building stands 112 meters tall, covers about 17,000 square meters of floor area and is crowned by a copper roof that has weathered to green over time; its tower contains 436 steps. Public areas include a lobby used for concerts and exhibitions and the ornate Kaisersaal, or Emperor's Hall, used for formal occasions.
