The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico occupies a building on the west side of the Zocalo, the main plaza of Mexico City historic center, that opened in 1899 as the Centro Mercantil department store. In 1908 the building received an Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling designed by Jacques Gruber of the Nancy School, made of about 20,000 pieces of glass and hiding the initials CM for Ciudad Mexico within its floral pattern. The building was converted into a hotel and reopened as the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico in 1968, in time for that year Summer Olympic Games.
