Grand Hotel Stockholm

The Grand Hotel opened in 1874 on Stockholm's waterfront at Sodra Blasieholmshamnen, facing the Royal Palace across the water, built in a French Renaissance Revival style typical of the grand European hotels of the period. Nobel laureates traditionally stayed at the hotel during the annual Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm, a tradition that began soon after the prizes were first awarded in 1901 and that continues for laureates to this day even though the prize banquet itself later moved to Stockholm City Hall. The hotel underwent a major renovation and expansion in the 1890s under the architect Ferdinand Boberg, who added the building's distinctive tower and much of its present decorative facade, and further expansions through the twentieth century absorbed neighboring buildings into the hotel complex. Its Veranda restaurant and Cadier Bar, both overlooking the harbor, became established meeting places for Stockholm's political and cultural elite across the twentieth century. The hotel remains under private ownership and is widely regarded as Sweden's most prestigious historic hotel.
