Ampthill (Cumberland County, Virginia)

Ampthill is a plantation in Cartersville, Virginia, about 45 minutes west of Richmond, whose brick addition was designed by Thomas Jefferson and built between 1835 and 1837 onto an earlier clapboard structure, in an Early Republic and Roman Revival style. Ampthill is the only privately owned Jeffersonian property in Virginia and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register since 1972; the present 60-acre property, drawn from an original tract of 2,870 acres, includes the manor house with its original glass windows, four outbuildings and a barn built in 1920, and today operates as a bed and breakfast.
