Scottish Baronial Architecture

Nineteenth-Century Revival and Eclectic Architecture

Scottish baronial is a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival architectural style that revived the forms and ornament of Scotland's historical architecture from the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Buildings in the style are characterized by elaborate rooflines embellished with conical roofs, tourelles and battlements with machicolations, often set within an asymmetrical plan. It flourished during the nineteenth-century fashion for Romanticism and the Picturesque and is considered the Scottish equivalent of the Jacobethan Revival that was popular in England during the same period. Its notable Victorian-era architects included William Burn and David Bryce.
