Gate

A gate or gateway is a point of entry to or from a space enclosed by walls.

A gate is a point of entry through a wall or fence enclosing a space, and the word comes from a Proto-Germanic term for an opening or passageway; the concept originally named the gap in the wall itself rather than the barrier that closes it. A gate leaf works like a door, fixed on one side and opening and closing on the other, and may carry a latch for everyday use or a lock for security, worked by hand or automatically. Gates range from small garden or doorway openings to the great gates of castles and fortified towns, and can serve a purely decorative purpose as well as controlling who passes. Notable examples include the Japanese torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine and the Indonesian candi bentar, a split gateway form.
