The Black Pyramid was built by King Amenemhat III during the late Middle Kingdom of Egypt. It is one of five pyramids surviving from an original eleven built at Dahshur, and although it was originally named Amenemhet is Mighty, it earned its common name from its dark, decaying appearance as a mound of rubble. It was the first Egyptian pyramid built to house both the king and his queens together. The French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan began excavating the Dahshur pyramids in 1892, and the German Archaeological Institute of Cairo completed the excavation of the Black Pyramid in 1983.
