The Buried Pyramid, known in scholarship as the Step Pyramid of Sekhemkhet, is an unfinished seven step pyramid at Saqqara built around 2645 BC for the pharaoh Sekhemkhet, second king of Egypt's Third Dynasty. Sekhemkhet's dynasty is generally placed at the start of the Old Kingdom and is thought to have played an important part in the transition from the Early Dynastic Period to the age of pyramid building. The pyramid was left incomplete at the king's death and remains largely buried beneath its own rubble, which gives the site its common name.
