Grand Army of the Republic Hall (Worcester, Massachusetts)

The Grand Army of the Republic Hall is a historic building at 55 Pearl Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, one block west of Main Street. It was designed by the architect Calvert Vaux and built in 1876 as the home of George and Sarah Bull, financed by Sarah's father Daniel B. Wesson, in an ornate Victorian Gothic and Stick style built of ashlar granite blocks in contrasting colors under a steeply pitched, gabled slate roof, with applied Stick style woodwork and carved rosettes on its stone window lintels; a fence with granite posts dating to the original construction still stands in front of the building, and a 1912 addition by the Worcester architect Stephen C. Earle enlarged the structure. The local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union Civil War veterans' organization, bought the building in 1912 and made it a memorial to its war veterans, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
