The Calgary Tower is a 190.8-metre free-standing observation tower in downtown Calgary, Alberta, designed by the local firm W.G. Milne and A. Dale and Associates and opened on June 30, 1968, originally under the name Husky Tower. It was built jointly by Marathon Realty Company and Husky Oil as part of an urban renewal project marking the approaching centennial of Canadian Confederation, and it briefly stood as the tallest structure in Canada outside Toronto. Roughly sixty percent of the tower's weight of about 10,884 tonnes lies below ground, anchoring its slender reinforced-concrete shaft, which was renamed the Calgary Tower in 1971. The tower carries an observation deck and revolving restaurant near its top and was a founding member of the World Federation of Great Towers when that organization formed in 1989.
