The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial is a First World War military cemetery covering about 130.5 acres near the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon in the Meuse department of northeastern France, designed by the architectural firm York and Sawyer and dedicated on May 30, 1937. It holds 14,246 American graves, the largest number of American military dead anywhere in Europe, most of them service members killed during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of 1918, one of the largest operations fought by the American Expeditionary Forces. The cemetery's eight burial sections are arranged around a central reflecting pool, and its chapel carries stained-glass windows depicting the insignia of the American units that fought in the campaign, with further tablets recording the names of service members whose remains were never recovered. The cemetery is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
